There is much to see around Wick and Caithness. We can only list a few suggestions here, but we are sure you will not be disappointed with your visit to "the Lowlands beyond the Highlands". Being the most northerly county on the British mainland, we have long summer nights, with beautiful sunsets. In fact, around mid-summer, it is barely dark for more than a few hours. Not quite the Land of the Midnight Sun, but not far off it! There are many activities to enjoy: Golf, Bowls, Fishing (sea, river and loch) and Surfing to name a few. There are many walks on beach and cliff with stunning panoramas. The Music Show, every Wednesday evening in the Pipe Band Hall with Pipes, Dancers and Singers, not forgetting Tea and Biscuits. The Wick Heritage Centre holds a mine of interest on the history of Wick and Caithness. For whisky lovers, there is the world famous Old Pulteney Distillery. John O'Groats is just 17 miles to the north, where a pedestrian ferry can take you to Orkney. Gills Ferry a few miles west of 'Groats' can take vehicles. Both run several times per day. Please check in advance, since these services can be very busy during the summer season. Contrary to popular belief, John O'Groats is not the most northerly point on the British Mainland, neither is nearby Duncansby Head, famous for the stunning views of the 'Duncansby Stacks. The title of most northerly point is in fact Dunnet Head, around ten miles west of John O'Groats. It is well worth visit, to stand on the cliff-top, and depending the direction you are facing, have nothing but ocean between you and the North Pole, Iceland, Greenland or North America!
